CARE-C Researchers Contribute to the Limassol City Cooling Challenge

Research scientists from CARE-C at the Cyprus Institute recently participated in the inaugural Annual Partner Meeting of the LC3 – Limassol City Cooling Challenge project, held in Limassol and online on May 28-29, 2024. This significant event brought together key stakeholders to discuss the progress and future direction of this ambitious initiative aimed at mitigating urban heat through innovative climate action.

Collaborative Efforts and Presentations

Dr. Jonilda Kushta, a dedicated research scientist at CARE-C, presented the shared objectives and synergistic potential of the LC3 and LIFE Sirius projects. Her insightful presentation highlighted the complementary nature of both projects, emphasising how their combined efforts can lead to more effective climate solutions for urban environments.

Joining Dr. Kushta were technical research specialists Angelos Violaris and Marios Christoforides, who co-presented methodologies for calculating emission inventories at the city level. Their presentation provided a detailed overview of the tools and techniques available to accurately measure and manage urban emissions, a critical component in the journey towards climate neutrality.

Diverse Participation and Engagement

The meeting saw the active participation of 20 representatives from various organisations, including the Limassol Municipality, the Cyprus Institute, the Cyprus University of Technology, and Friends of the Earth. This diverse group of stakeholders underscores the collaborative nature of the LC3 project, bringing together expertise from different sectors to tackle the complex challenges of urban climate action.

Limassol’s Role in the NetZeroCities Programme

Limassol is among 53 cities selected from 21 European Union and Horizon 2020 Associated Countries to participate in the NetZeroCities Pilot Cities Programme. Managed by the Mission Platform of the EU Mission on Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities (EU Cities Mission), this programme is designed to drive unprecedented climate action across Europe.

The LC3 Project’s Vision and Goals

As part of the NetZeroCities initiative, the LC3 – Limassol City Cooling Challenge project aims to experiment with innovative methods to decarbonise the city over two years. This pilot project is set to transform urban climate transition by implementing systemic and locally designed actions across various domains, including buildings, waste management, and leveraging changes in governance, finance, and policy.

Moving Forward

The successful collaboration and knowledge sharing at the 1st Annual Partner Meeting mark a promising start for the LC3 project. The contributions from CARE-C researchers and other stakeholders will play a pivotal role in ensuring the project’s success, paving the way for Limassol to become a model for climate-neutral and smart cities.

As the LC3 project progresses, continued interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative approaches will be key to achieving its ambitious goals. By working together, Limassol and its partners are setting a new standard for urban climate action, demonstrating how cities can effectively combat climate change through strategic, science-based initiatives.

Stay tuned as we follow the journey of LC3 and its impact on Limassol and beyond. Together, we can turn today’s challenges into tomorrow’s sustainable solutions.
