The recent CLIMPACT Dialogue Forum, held on February 18-19, 2025, in Athens, brought together leading experts, researchers, and policymakers to address one of the most pressing challenges of our time: climate change. Focused on the Mediterranean region, the forum highlighted the urgency of action, fostering collaboration, and offering a platform for innovative solutions. The discussions not only delved into critical issues like climate-induced disasters and air pollution but also showcased the significant synergies between ongoing projects, particularly the Life SIRIUS initiative.
A Good Opportunity for Dissemination and Synergy
The CLIMPACT Forum served as an excellent opportunity for dissemination, particularly in showcasing the collaborative efforts of Life SIRIUS alongside other climate-focused projects. This event allowed participants to share knowledge, highlight successful strategies, and encourage cross-border cooperation. The presence of diverse stakeholders, including governmental bodies, research institutions, and private-sector representatives, was crucial in reinforcing the shared vision of combating climate change.
The Life SIRIUS project, which aims to integrate real-time climate data to support decision-making processes, benefitted from the exchange of ideas and potential partnerships. The dialogue fostered at the forum illuminated how interconnected projects like Life SIRIUS can enhance the region’s climate resilience, leveraging shared resources and knowledge to address pressing climate challenges.

Key Panel Discussions
The forum featured two pivotal panels focusing on different dimensions of the climate crisis. In Panel 2, which addressed the prevention and management of natural disasters, Dr. Panos Hadjinicolaou from the Cyprus Institute (CYI) shared his insights into how Mediterranean countries can better prepare for and mitigate the effects of climate-induced heatwave related disasters, especially for the cities of the region which experience the additional warming from the urban heat island effect. His expertise on this topic underscored the importance of predictive models, early warning systems, and coordinated science-based adaptation interventions to safeguard vulnerable communities.
Meanwhile, Panel 1 tackled air pollution and its impact on health. Prof. Dimitrios Melas emphasized the critical need for an integrated approach in air quality improvement strategies, as changes in the atmospheric concentrations of major pollutants, such as ozone and particulate matter, produce contrasting climatic effects. Dr. Daphne Parliari contributed to the discussion by emphasizing the critical link between atmospheric pollution and public health outcomes. With increasing pollution levels in the Mediterranean region, her presentation highlighted the need for policy interventions and the integration of health-focused strategies in climate action plans.
Looking Ahead
As the Mediterranean faces more frequent and intense climate-related challenges, the conversations held at the CLIMPACT Dialogue Forum are just the beginning. The insights shared by experts like Prof. Melas, Dr. Hadjinicolaou and Dr. Parliari, along with the synergies demonstrated by Life SIRIUS and other projects, provide a hopeful outlook for tackling the region’s climate crisis. Continued collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation will be essential in creating a resilient Mediterranean for future generations.
