CARE-C researchers from the Cyprus Institute recently joined the Annual Session of Cyprus’ Technical Committee for Air Quality Improvement. Led by Prof. Panos Hadjinicolaou and Dr. Katiana Constantinidou, they unveiled the ‘System for Integrated Environmental Information in Urban Areas’ (LIFE SIRIUS), a groundbreaking initiative funded by the EU LIFE Programme (Project No: 101074365, Duration: 1.8.2022 – 31.07.2025) and spearheaded by Dr. Joni Kushta.
LIFE SIRIUS targets enhanced Air Quality Plans (AQPs) compliance across EU urban hubs like Nicosia, Thessaloniki, and Rome, empowering local authorities with advanced skills and knowledge. The project ensures:
(a) Tangible enhancements to AQPs via policy updates and decision-making processes.
(b) Strategic pathways for scaling up solutions, aligning with climate change imperatives and health considerations.
The gathering fostered an inclusive discussion on the National Action Plan, uniting key stakeholders from government bodies, municipalities, and scientific institutions to propel Cyprus towards cleaner, healthier air.
